Throughout this month Night Train celebrates the centennial birthday of one of the great singers in jazz, Joe Williams, but we begin the month with many more, both contemporary and legendary – including Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Shirley Horn, Kurt Elling, Catherine Russell, Mose Allison, Nat King Cole, Blossom Dearie and more.

Night Train marks birthdays of singer Cassandra Wilson and guitarist Jim Hall (including music from a new album in tribute to him from bassist Ben Allison). Plus music from December featured artist Joe Williams and new releases from David Hazeltine, the Brad Goode Quintet, Charlie Haden & Brad Mehldau, Joe Locke, and Stefon Harris & Blackout.

Jazz with an international flair tonight on the Night Train with birthday salutes to Italian pianist and composer Enrico Pieranunzi and Brazilian guitarist, pianist and composer Egberto Gismonti, plus new music from Japanese pianist Michika Fukumori, Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes, Korean pianist Bongwool Lee, Brazilian guitarist Sergio Pereira, Canadian bass trumpeter Al Muirhead, and Randy Brecker with Helsinki’s UMO Jazz Orchestra.

Coming up tonight on the Night Train, more music from December featured artist, singer Joe Williams, and birthday salutes to the legendary pianist and composer Dave Brubeck, lyricist Ira Gershwin, and bassists Harvie Swartz and Jay Leonhart (including a Song Travels special featuring Leonhart in hour two of the show) – plus Crescent City pianist Henry Butlet (featured on the next Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival concert special Monday December 31), and new releases from singer Cecile McLorin Salvant and tenor saxophonist Jorge Nila.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
