Jazz Women Feature: Int. Women’s Day, Jazz Singers & Jazz Ensembles

Monday, March 8

Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate International Women’s Day with a program devote to women in jazz. We’ll hear recent albums from vocalists Laruen Henderson and Andy James, trombonist Audrey Ochoa, and pianist Lisa Hilton. We’ll also mark some jazz birthdays by featuring those artists in projects they did with women – including George Coleman (here with Nina Simone and Roseanna Vitro), Billy Childs (with Alicia Olatuja), Dick Hyman (with Rosemary Clooney) and James Williams (with Karrin Allyson). And in hour two it’s a Women’s History Month Special featuring Lil Harden Armstrong, Mary Lou Williams, Marian McPartland and more.

Tuesday, March 9

In conjunction with the March Women’s History Month feature, Night Train highlights contemporary and classic female jazz singers tonight. We’ll hear Billie Holiday, Stacey Kent, Dianne Reeves, Jazzmeia Horn, Tierney Sutton, Dinah Washington, and Blossom Dearie. We’ll also hear several female instrumentalists as well, including  music from pianists Marian McPartland and Leslie Pintchik, and organist Akiko Tsuruga.

Wednesday, March 10

In conjunction with the March Women’s History Month feature, Night Train highlights music from all-women jazz lineups. We’ll hear pioneering recordings from the International Sweethearts of Rhythm and Mary Lou Williams’ Girl Stars, along with such contemporary ensembles as Lioness, Artemis, the Ellen Rowe Octet, Monika Herzig’s Sheroes, Jane Bunnett & Maqueque, the Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, the Diva Jazz Orchestra, and the 3D Jazz Trio. We’ll also hear a classic early Chick Corea/Return to Forever track featuring Flora Purim, and new releases from the Uptown Jazz Tent, Larry Newcomb Quartet, saxophonist Ian Hendrickson-Smith, trombonist Noah Bless, and guitarist Lee Ritenour with his first ever solo recording.

Thursday, March 11

Night Train continues the Women’s History Month feature with the latest releases from pianists Yoko Miwa and Miki Yamanaka, and Maria Schneider (from her Grammy-nominated Data Lords release), along with vocalists Betty Carter and (for her birthday today) Judy Niemack. Night Train also marks the centennial birthday of new tango legend Astor Piazzolla (with a tribute from Gary Burton), and the birthday of vocalist Bobby McFerrin (featured in a special in hour two of the show).
