Independence Days Of Argentina & The Bahamas, World Birthdays & More ‘Nordic Cool’

Monday, July 9

Global Village celebrates both the Independence Day of Argentina and the birthday of one of its most famous singers, ‘new song’ great Mercedes Sosa. Tango from traditional to contemporary along with electro, regional traditional, tango jazz and more are featured in performances from Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzolla, the Tango Negro Trio with Juan Carlos Caceres, Chango Spaziuk, Gotan Project and more. And as we continue the July ‘Nordic Cool’ feature, we’ll also include a bit of tango from Finland.

Tuesday, July 10

It’s Bela and the Bahamas this time in the Global Village as we mark the birthday of banjoist Bela Fleck with some of his world music projects, and Independence Day in the Bahamas, which we celebrate with music from Joseph Spence, the Baha Men, Exuma and more.

Wednesday, July 11

Another round of global guitars this time in the Global Village, including music from Jamaican legend Ernest Ranglin, guitar wizard David Lindley, German guitarist Leni Stern from her latest African project, 3, the Malagasy Guitar Masters, and as we continue our ‘Hot July Nordic Cool’ feature, ‘the Jimi Hendrix of Norway’ – Terje Rypdal, and Norwegian world-folk artist Michael Krumin’s latest release with Nutopia. Plus a new compilation of music from South African legend Hugh Masekela, the latest from Monsieur Doumani from Cypress, and Angelique Kidjo’s new reworking of the Talking Heads’ album, Remain in Light.

Thursday, July 12

In conjunction with the ‘Hot July-Cool Nordic Sounds’ feature, Global Village heads to Sweden for traditional and contemporary folk music, along with selections inspired by jazz, world, and reggae influences, and some cross-cultural collaborations. We’ll hear music from Vasen (featured on the next Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival concert special at the end of the month), Garmarna, the Swedish Sax Septet, Reggae Team, Nordic Raga, and some sublime and award-winning music from Ale Moller with Lena Willemark.

Friday, July 13

Global Village marks birthdays of Cuban pianist and composer Harold Lopez-Nussa (including music from his latest release) and of percussionist Pete Escovedo (both as a leader and as a special guest with Bobby McFerrin and Santana). Plus new music from Tribu, and Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 – and more cool Nordic sounds for a hot July – this time from Monoswezi (a group featuring musicians from Norway, Zimbabwe and Mozambique) and from the new album from Tunto.
