Holiday Specials, World Jazz, Buena Vista And Beyond

Monday, December 23

It’s a Global Village holiday extravaganza, featuring seasonal favorites done world music style and holiday songs from various corners of the globe. Highlights include the salsa Christmas classic Asalto Navideño, a favorite from Louis Armstrong, a tiny Nutcracker from the Modern Mandolin Quartet, a holiday favorite done punk-polka style by Brave Combo, and songs of the season from the Caribbean and New Orleans.

Tuesday, December 24

Not a silent night, but a quiet one as Global Village celebrates the holiday season with some traditional, folk, and generally more gentle seasonal songs from around the globe - including some holiday Hawaiian slack key and flamenco guitar, along with music from the Westminster Concert Bell Choir, Loreena McKennitt, Anuna, Chaise Lounge, Boys of the Lough, and the Modern Mandolin Quartet.

Wednesday, December 25

Global Village teams up with the Savannah Music Festival for a holiday special featuring seasonal music from artists appearing at the 2020 Fest in Savannah. Among the artists featured are the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Louisiana Cajun band Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, mandolinist and guitarist Mike Marshall, country and Americana singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell, and guitarist Leo Kottke. And then join us throughout the coming year for world music concert performances in our third season of Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival.

Thursday, December 26

Global Village features some world jazz sounds this time – including the jazz-inspired sounds of Afrobeat (from Italy’s Mamud Band), world chamber jazz (from the pioneering ensemble, Oregon), Middle Eastern jazz (with guitar and oud player Amos Hoffman), Flamenco Nuevo (from the Jazzpaña project featuring Vince Mendoza, Steve Khan, the WDR Big Band and more), Haitian Mini Jazz (from the Mini All Stars), contemporary Cuban jazz (Roberto Fonseca), and even some reggae jazz (courtesy of Jazz Jamaica).

It’s Buena Vista and Beyond this time in the Global Village. We’ll hear music some Buena Vista releases that followed the blockbuster album from the group and contemporary artists from Cuba or inspired by Cuban music. Featured in the show are Ibrahim Ferrer, Ruben Gonzalez and Omara Portuondo from Buena Vista; the AfroCubism album that realized the initial Buena Vista plan of bringing together Cuban and African musicians; Congolese rhumba veteran Wuta Mayi; Angelique Kidjo’s tribute to Celia Cruz; Son Cubano cuatro master Kiki Valera; and Latin jazz percussionist Poncho Sanchez, with his first new studio album in seven years.
