Night Train steps aside for two Joy to the World holiday specials for this Christmas Eve. The shows feature Bob Thompson and his band in concert with a special guest vocalist. And since Night Train is celebrating the centennial birthday of Joe Williams, it made sense to feature two talented male singers who joined in for the holiday specials. In hour one we’ll hear a Kansas City born, Columbus based singer who appeared with Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Mann, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, Columbus Symphony and more. In hour two, Tom Lellis is the special guest. This Ohio born singer worked with Ray Charles and Gregory Hines, as well as recording a number of albums under his own name.

Night Train steps aside for two holiday specials this Christmas Night. In hour one, we’ll hear a live performance from Memphis Ukulele Band featuring songs from their new holiday album, Holidays Ain’t the Same. Then in hour two it’s a Canadian Brass holiday special, as this eclectic and accomplished quintet present a jazzy set of seasonal favorites.

Night Train celebrates the birthday of one of today’s finest jazz guitarists, John Scofield, with a program devoted to his music. We’ll hear Sco as a leader from across his career, including from his newest album, Combo 66. Plus collaborations with guitarists Pat Metheny and John Abercrombie, and guest appearances with Herbie Hancock, Gary Burton, Joey DeFrancesco, Gerry Mulligan, McCoy Tyner, Mose Allison and more – and a couple of rare settings – with a big band and playing acoustic guitar.

Night Train wraps up the week with a program highlighting tribute albums – with music Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Wes Montgomery, Eberhard Weber, Bill Evans, and the composers Jerome Kern, Billy Strayhorn, and Rodgers & Hammerstein. Plus music from NEA Jazz Masters - including Gary Burton, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Clark Terry, Abbey Lincoln, Marian McPartland, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and soon to be 2019 NEA Jazz Master Maria Schneider.
