Among the highlights: one of the giants of South African reggae, Lucky Dube; Dube’s original group, the Slaves; a cover of a Bob Marley classic from Freshlyground; a reggae-inspired song from township favorites Mahlathini & the Mahotella Queens; and Harley & the Rasta Family.

Thursday, December 27

It’s global soul and funk this time in the Global Village- and ‘Reggae Got Soul’ with Toots & the Maytals’ classic song along with soul-reggae sounds from Third World, the Beat, and Corey Harris (with special guest Henry Butler, featured next week on the next Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival  show); West African soul and funk from the Ivory Coast Soul 2 compilation, William Onyeabor, and a new album from Vaudou Game; and Latin soul from the new Hip Spanic Allstars, Willie Bobo, and (in conjunction with our December New Orleans feature) Dr. John and Cubanismo in New Orleans.

Friday, December 28

In conjunction with the Global Village December Music of New Orleans feature, the show remembers Charles Neville on what would have been his 80th birthday. We’ll hear him as part of the Neville Brothers, as part of the post-Katrina New Orleans Social Club project, and as a guest with Maria Muldaur, Dr. John, Wild Tchoupitoulas, and heading up his own band, Diversity. Plus new music from Moonlight Benjamin, the Ska Around the World compilation, and Black Masala.
