GV@SMF, Benin Independence, New Month/New Music + Roots, Easy Star And Trojan Records Reggae

Monday, July 30

The final Monday of every month, we present our special concert series, Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival, featuring world music artists and groups who have appeared at the prestigious annual festival that takes place every spring in Savannah, Georgia. This time, in conjunction with our Hot July/Cool Nordic Sounds feature, the Danes Meet the Swedes in a special double bill with veteran Swedish folk trio, Vasen,  and classical and traditional ensemble, the Danish String Quartet.

Tuesday, July 31

Global Village highlights some ‘roots’ sounds – including the song “Roots,” the B-side of a single from Bob Marley and the Wailers, and a roots reggae  album from Ivory Coast’s Tiken Jah Fakoly – as we highlight reggae this month as part of our Trojan Records 50th Anniversary feature. Plus some world jazz sounds from Brazilian singer Joyce Moreno, the world jazz blends of the Souljazz Orchestra and of TriBeCaStan, and the jazz-influenced Afrobeat of Fela.

Wednesday, August 1

Global Village marks Benin’s Independence Day with a program devoted to music from that West African nation. We’ll hear one of its most famous singers, Angelique Kidjo, along with jazz guitarist Lionel Loueke, the big band Afrobeat of the Gangbe Brass Band, the reunited legendary Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, and rarities from artists who helped shape the sound of contemporary urban music in Benin.

Thursday, August 2

Global Village highlights music from the diverse international lineup of artists on the Easy Star label. We’ll hear music from London’s Skints, Leeds’ Gentleman’s Dub Club, New Zealand’s Black Seeds, East Coast band John Brown’s Body, and California’s The Expanders – plus the Easy Star All Stars projects that covered classic albums from Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Michael Jackson and Radiohead, and featured a host of reggae legends.

Friday, August 3

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of recently released and forthcoming world music albums.  Among the highlights this time:

Something a bit different as Global Village kicks off the August feature marking the 50th anniversary of the influential U.K. ska and reggae label, Trojan Records, with music from a series of new compilations that have come out to mark the occasion. We’ll also highlight the latest in the reissue series of reggae titles from Nighthawk Records; showcase two of the key figures in Jamaica’s roots revival movement who have new albums out – Protoje and Kabaka Pyramid; and get to new releases from reggae influenced bands from Guam (the For Peace Band) and California (Slightly Stoopid).

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
