Erroll Garner, Chick Corea & Tal Farlow + World Ocean Day, Kenny Barron & Joao Gilberto

Jun 7, 2021

Monday, June 7

Night Train marks the centennial birthday of June featured artist Tal Farlow, who was born on this date in 1921. One of the architects of modern jazz guitar, Farlow was known for his fleet fingers and carefully constructed lines. We’ll hear early music he did with the Red Norvo Trio (with Charles Mingus part of the group) and Artie Shaw, later recording with Buddy DeFranco and the blues duo Cephas & Wiggins, along with selections from albums he did as a leader from across his long if sporadic career. Plus the latest from the Uptown Jazz Tentet, Brianna Thomas Band, Larry Newcomb Quartet, Ian Hendrickson-Smith, Jim Snidero and Nelson Riveros.

Tuesday, June 8

Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate World Oceans Day, a UN designated day to draw attention to the importance of the oceans and the need for their sustainable management. We’ll hear ‘sea songs’ from June featured artists Chick Corea and Erroll Garner, along with Ralph Towner, Larry Goldings, and Paul Silbergleit. It’s also the birthday of drummer Willie Jones III and we’ll feature music from his own new album, along with guest appearances he made with Cedar Walton and Russell Malone. Other new releases tonight included Serbian guitarist Rale Micic, Singapore pianist Jeremy Monteiro, singer and bassist Nicki Parrott, bass trombonist Jennifer Wharton, and saxophonist Jack Brandfield.

Wednesday, June 9

Night Train marks birthdays of legendary songwriter Cole Porter (with selections performed by each of the June featured artists – Erroll Garner, Chick Corea, and Tal Farlow), saxophonist Amy Denio (from the new album from the Tiptons Sax Quartet), and pianist Kenny Barron (with Greg Abate and Stan Getz in hour one, and in a Savannah Music Festival concert special in hour two of the show).

Thursday, June 10

Night Train marks birthdays of two jazz guitarists tonight. We’ll hear Jonathan Kreisberg as part of Dr. Lonnie Smith’s band and on a solo album he did under his own name. It’s also the birthday of pioneering bossa nova guitarist and vocalist Joao Gilberto – featured on a bossa classic with Stan Getz and Antonio Carlos Jobim, as a leader, and in a special in hour two of the show. Plus new music from former Wichita guitarist Greg Skaff and organist Brian Charette, and a classic from June featured artist Erroll Garner.
