Monday, June 21

Night Train marks the birthday of contemporary pianist Eric Reed with work he did as a leader, as part of the Wynton Marsalis Septet, with Mary Stallings and Wessell Anderson, and in a special in hour two of the show. There’s also more music from June featured artists Erroll Garner and Chick Corea (an early sideman gig with Blue Mitchell), and new releases from organist Mike LeDonne and vibes player Simon Moullier.

Tuesday, June 22

Norwegian drummer Snorre Kirk, Latin jazz percussionist Ray Mantilla, and Latin jazz pianist Arturo O’Farrill are featured tonight for their birthdays (including a O’Farrill special in hour two. There’s more music from June featured artists Erroll Garner, Chick Corea, and Tal Farlow, and new music tonight from guitarist Roni Ben-Hur, drummer Joe Chambers, and singer Alyssa Allgood.

Wednesday, June 23

Music from saxophonist Donald Harrison, pianist Ben Paterson, and bassist Milt Hinton (including a Jazz Profiles special in hour two of the show); new music from Vincent Herring, Diego Rivera, Michael Wolff, and Hays Street & Hart, and June featured artist Chick Corea in an early guest spot with flutist Hubert Laws - all tonight on the Night Train.

Thursday, June 24

In honor of Caribbean American Heritage Month (celebrated throughout June in the Global Village, Night Train features music inspired by the Caribbean tonight. We’ll hear from Jamaican-born artists Monty Alexander, Dizzy Reece and Joe Harriott, the Mozayik Haitian jazz group, Dominican pianist Michel Camilo, Puerto Rican saxophonist David Sanchez, and an album that explores the connections between Caribbean and Chinese music and history from Dongfeng Liu. We’ll also get to a couple of tribute albums tonight on the show - Eddie Daniels (for Egberto Gismonti), Don Braden (celebrating Stevie Wonder, and Earth, Wind & Fire), and Charenee Wade (saluting Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson).

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
