Earth Day, Euro Folk, African Blues & Seven Decades Of World Music

Monday, April 22

Global Village marks Earth Day with songs from Tom Lehrer, Jimmy Cliff, Marvin Gaye, Chicago Afrobeat Project and more. Plus birthday salutes to Latin boogaloo star Joe Cuba and Hawaiian guitar great Gabby Pahinui.

Tuesday, April 23

In conjunction with the April Richard Thompson feature, Global Village expands its contemporary folk horizons in a show devoted to European neo-folk music. We’ll highlight artists from across the continent inspired by traditional sounds, though in many cases adding contemporary and other global stylistic influences. Among the artists featured are Italian neo-folk pioneer Riccardo Tesi, Galician piper and Silk Road Ensemble member Cristina Pato, Scottish singer-songwriter Karine Polwart, neo-rembetika group Trio Tekke, Sweden’s Vasen, and the Afro Celt Sound System.

Wednesday, April 24

Global Village marks birthdays of world/classical guitarist John Williams and also of sitarist, guitarist and percussionist Collin Walcott, cofounder of the world chamber jazz group Oregon and of Codona (with Don Cherry and Nana Vasconcelos). Plus music from Richard and Linda Thompson for the April feature, and new release from ‘Mongolia Meets Middle East’ group Equus, Sudanese-Italian singer Amira Kheir, and German flamenco guitarist Andreas Arnold.

Thursday, April 25

Global Village highlights some African blues in this visit – including music from guitar greats Ali Farka Toure and Djelimady Tounkara, the ‘desert blues’ of Bombino and Imarhan, blues harmonica player JeConte with the Mali All Stars, world-jazz guitarist Leni Stern, and the Soul of John Black.

Friday, April 26

Global Village looks back at the past seven decades and highlights some of the key artists and releases that helped shape what has come to be known as world music today. We’ll also look into our crystal ball and predict one of the big world music releases of 2019.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show.
