Tuesday, April 23
In conjunction with the April Richard Thompson feature, Global Village expands its contemporary folk horizons in a show devoted to European neo-folk music. We’ll highlight artists from across the continent inspired by traditional sounds, though in many cases adding contemporary and other global stylistic influences. Among the artists featured are Italian neo-folk pioneer Riccardo Tesi, Galician piper and Silk Road Ensemble member Cristina Pato, Scottish singer-songwriter Karine Polwart, neo-rembetika group Trio Tekke, Sweden’s Vasen, and the Afro Celt Sound System.
Wednesday, April 24
Global Village marks birthdays of world/classical guitarist John Williams and also of sitarist, guitarist and percussionist Collin Walcott, cofounder of the world chamber jazz group Oregon and of Codona (with Don Cherry and Nana Vasconcelos). Plus music from Richard and Linda Thompson for the April feature, and new release from ‘Mongolia Meets Middle East’ group Equus, Sudanese-Italian singer Amira Kheir, and German flamenco guitarist Andreas Arnold.

Global Village highlights some African blues in this visit – including music from guitar greats Ali Farka Toure and Djelimady Tounkara, the ‘desert blues’ of Bombino and Imarhan, blues harmonica player JeConte with the Mali All Stars, world-jazz guitarist Leni Stern, and the Soul of John Black.

Global Village looks back at the past seven decades and highlights some of the key artists and releases that helped shape what has come to be known as world music today. We’ll also look into our crystal ball and predict one of the big world music releases of 2019.
