"It’s just a jump to the left!"
For the uninitiated, those words might sound like the directions to Wile E. Coyote’s weaponry from Acme. But for those in the know, they are an invitation to dance… To dance The Time Warp.
“The Time Warp,” like the rest of the music, lyrics and book of The Rocky Horror Show, was written by Richard O’Brien, who at that point in the early '70s was an unemployed actor with time and creativity to burn. He wrote the musical over a succession of winter evenings, inspired by a childhood fondness for old horror and science fiction B-movie schlock.
When O’Brien showed a portion of his script to Australian stage director Jim Sharman, Sharman decided to produce and direct the show. In rehearsals, it was known as They Came from Denton High, but just before the show went into previews, Jim Sharman suggested a title change. The Rocky Horror Show premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in London on June 19, 1973. It moved to other locations in the course of its run, which ended in 1980.
In 1975, the stage musical was adapted to film, starring much of the original cast. The film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, quickly became a cult favorite.
Beginning October 3rd, the stage version, The Rocky Horror Show, is playing at The Crown Uptown Theatre. Comedy and camp are delivered in high style-- as you might expect from a musical that features a transvestite scientist who plots to make himself the perfect man.
