Classical Meets Jazz & Jazz Birthdays: Elvin Jones, Papa John DeFrancesco & Baby Face Willette

Monday, September 9

Night Train marks birthdays of legendary drummer Elvin Jones (heard here as a leader and on a classic he recorded with John Coltrane), bassist George Mraz, and saxophonist David Sanchez. We’ll also hear new music from trombonist Steve Davis, drummer Al Foster, and guitarist Corey Christiansen, and as Night Train continues the September Chamber Jazz feature, there’s music from the Modern Jazz Quartet and a special about the group in hour two of the show.

Tuesday, September 10

Night Train continues its September salute to Classical Music Month with some suites – from Duke Ellington, Charlie Byrd, Wynton Marsalis, and Claude Bolling. We’ll also hear a tribute to Modern Jazz Quartet member and classically-influenced jazz artist John Lewis, The Classical Variations from Uri Caine, and more.

Wednesday, September 11

Night Train marks the birthdays of award-winning Canadian pianist Oliver Jones and soul jazz organist Baby Face Willette (including a special about him in hour two of the show). New music tonight includes Chick Corea with his new Spanish Heart Band, the trio of Akiko Tsuruga, Jeff Hamilton and Graham Dechter, and veteran pianist George Cables. And in conjunction with the September Classical Music Month/Chamber Jazz feature, we’ll hear the groundbreaking hit debut from French pianist Jacques Loussier that featured his jazz reinterpretations of compositions from Bach.

Thursday, September 12

Night Train continues the September Classical Music Month/Chamber Jazz feature with some new albums drawing on classical music influences, including the latest from singer, songwriter and pianist Patricia Barber, and another project also inspired by classical literature, Karim Maurice’s musical reinterpretation of the Odyssey on the Odysseus Fantasy album. Plus birthday celebrations for organist Papa John DeFrancesco (including with his son, Joey DeFrancesco), trumpeter Brian Lynch, and tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton – and the latest from Lioness, Jim Snidero, Ken Fowser, and Bill O’Connell & the Afro Caribbean Ensemble.
