Celebrating Jamaican And Ivory Coast Independence Days, South African Women’s Day & More

Monday, August 6

Global Village celebrates Jamaican Independence Day with music from the island nation, including Bob Marley & the Wailers, solo projects from original Wailers Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh, ska from the Skatalites and associated artists, a rock steady hit from the Paragons, and conscious reggae classics from Culture and Burning Spear.

Tuesday, August 7

Global Village marks Ivory Coast Independence Day with a program devoted to music from that West African nation, including legendary artists and rising stars in a variety of styles, from traditionally inspired music to Ivorian reggae, soukous, afrobeat and zouglou sounds. Among the artists featured on the show are Alpha Blondy, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Dobet Gnahore, Pierre Antoine, and Jean Baptise Zibodi along with selections from the Ivory Coast Soul and Cote d’Ivoire 50th Anniversary compilations.

Wednesday, August 8

Global Village marks the birthday of English folk guitar great John Renbourn for his birthday, along with music from his bandmate in Pentangle, Bert Jansch. We’ll hear music they did as a duo and as part of Pentangle, along with solo projects from both.

Thursday, August 9

Global Village marks South Africa’s National Women’s Day. Now a public holiday in that country, it commemorates the anniversary of an event that took place on August 9, 1956, as 20,000 women of all races took to the streets to protest the country’s pass laws. Global Village highlights music from a number of female South African performers including Miriam Makeba, Bhusi Mhlongo, the Mahotella Queens, the Afrika Mamas, and Brenda Fassie.

Friday, August 10

Since we devoted our regular New Month/New Music new releases show last week to the new 50th anniversary compilations from Trojan Records (for the August feature) and other new reggae releases, we’re adding a second New Month/New Music show this month to highlight some of the great titles from other parts of the world that have just come out.

Among the highlights:

A brilliant new contemporary Italian banda release from Cesare Dell’anna & GirodiBanda

More Euro sounds from the Barcelona Gipsy Balkan Orchestra, the Amsterdam Klezmer Band with Hungary’s Sondorgo, the Greek Fusion Orchestra, and volume two in VampiSoul’s Czech Up! series for rock, jazz fusion, funk and more they are releasing in conjunction with a long-standing Czech label

And there’s new music from Haiti’s RAM, and a reissue of a classic album from Buena Vista Social Club member Cachaito.
