Night Train begins the week with music from several artists born on this date: pianist Wynton Kelly (as a leader and with Miles Davis and Lee Morgan), Canadian saxophonist PJ Perry (on a new set of duets with pianist Bill Mays), arranger and band leader Eddie Sauter, and lyricist Adolph Green (including a special about the long-standing writing partnership of Comden and Green in hour two of the show). Plus a new holiday release from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, a new solo project from pianist Ahmad Jamal and a new tribute to Lerner & Loewe from Adrian Cunningham with the Fred Hersch Trio and other friends.
Tuesday, December 3
Night Train warms things up a bit tonight with music inspired by the Caribbean. We’ll hear from Jamaican-born artists Monty Alexander, Dizzy Reece and Joe Harriott, the Mozayik Haitian jazz group, Dominican pianist Michel Camilo, Puerto Rican saxophonist David Sanchez, and an album that explores the connections between Caribbean and Chinese music and history from Dongfeng Liu. Also on tap - tribute albums from Eddie Daniels (for Egberto Gismonti), Don Braden (Stevie Wonder, and Earth, Wind & Fire), and Charenee Wade (Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson).
Wednesday, December 4
Night Train celebrates birthdays of vocalist Cassandra Wilson, guitarist Jim Hall, and pianist Andy LaVerne. We’ll hear several of Wilson’s solo albums, Hall with Pat Metheny, Ron Carter and Paul Desmond, and solo projects from LaVerne, including his inclusion in the acclaimed Maybeck Recital Hall Series. Also tonight, previously unreleased music from John Coltrane, and the latest from Poncho Sanchez (in a tribute to John Coltrane), Hendrik Meurkens (with legendary Kind of Blue drummer Jimmy Cobb), Houston Person, the Leslie Pintchik Trio, and the Ethan Iverson Quartet.
Thursday, December 5
“Good Vibes” tonight on the Night Train, as the show features both legendary and contemporary jazz vibraphone players. We’ll hear music from Gary Burton, Bobby Hutcherson, Milt Jackson (with Cannonball Adderley and as part of the Modern Jazz Quartet), Kathy Kelly, Dan McCarthy, Warren Wolf and Bill Ware (with the group Vibes). We’ll also hear new tribute albums from Rodney Whitaker (Duke Ellington), Paul Combs (Tadd Dameron), Nicolas Bearde (Nat King Cole), along with the latest from the Wayne Wallace Latin Jazz Quintet, Houston Person, and the Corey Weeds Quintet – and classic tracks from Duke Ellington and Eddie Harris.
