Birthdays Of Pianists George Cables, Ellis Marsalis, Mose Allison & Hampton Hawes

Monday, November 11

Night Train marks birthdays of pianist, singer and songwriter Mose Allison (including a special tribute to him in hour two of the show) and percussionist and composer Kahil El’Zabar (also featured tonight on Global Village). Also some new Latin jazz from pianist Michel Camilo, saxophonist (and genius draft recipient) Miguel Zenon, and guitarist Steve Khan, a new reissue from Erroll Garner, and more music from November featured artist George Cables.

Tuesday, November 12

Night Train marks birthdays of bassist Sam Jones (with Red Garland and Cannonball Adderley) and trumpeter Buck Clayton. The show also previews some upcoming regional jazz concerts, continues the November feature of music from pianist George Cables, and in hour two, a special about comebacks from Art Pepper, Dexter Gordon and Johnny Griffin – Cables worked with both Pepper and Gordon during their successful returns.

Wednesday, Novemeber 13

Night Train marks birthdays of West Coast pianist Hampton Hawes  (with Sonny Rollins and as a leader) and legendary drummer Idris Muhammad (with Charles Earland and Gene Ammons) tonight. Plus more music from November featured artist George Cables, a massive new reissue of early music from Nat King Cole, the latest from the Royce Campbell Organ Trio and singers Carmen Souza and Mary Stallings, and in hour two, a special about Kansas City band leader Benny Moten, who was also born on this date and whose group evolved into the Count Basie Orchestra.

Thursday, November 14

Night Train celebrates birthdays of two master jazz pianists tonight. One is November featured artist George Cables and in hour one we’ll hear him as a leader and as a sideman with Art Pepper, Bobby Hutcherson, Jay Clayton, Frank Morgan and Dexter Gordon. Then in hour two, it’s a special featuring New Orleans piano great Ellis Marsalis, who was also born on this date.
