In a special edition of the show, Global Village remembers legendary conguero Carlos “Patato” Valdes on his birthday. Born in Cuba and based in the U.S. starting in the ‘50s, Patato became one of the giants of Latin music and Latin jazz, working with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Tito Puente, Willie Bobo and more, and recording a series of stunning albums under his own name. We’ll hear some of his early appearances on jazz albums from the likes of Kenny Dorham and Grant Green, music from his long stint with world-jazz flute great Herbie Mann, and music he did as a leader and as a key member of the Conga Kings.

We’ve got some global guitars this time in the Global Village, including Indian electric guitarist Prasanna, Indian slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya, Jamaican guitar legend Ernest Ranglin, the guitar duo of Larry Coryell and Steve Khan, a flamenco guitar/ukulele duo featuring Pepe Romero and Daniel Ho, the Montreal Guitare Trio, Mandinka guitar master Djessou Mory Kante, Malagasy guitarist D’Gary, and more.
Wednesday, November 6
Global Village marks the birthday of Adolphe Sax, the man who invented the saxophone, with a program devoted to saxophone music and musicians from around the world. We’ll hear music from Africa’s Manu Dibango and Seun Kuti, Jamaica’s Skatalites and Dean Fraser, Balkan artists Fanfare Ciocarlia and Boris Kovac and a bossa nova classic featuring jazz saxophone giant Stan Getz.
Thursday, November 7
Global Village marks the birthday of Joni Mitchell with music from the legendary singer-songwriter and covers of her songs from Monty Alexander’s Ivory and Steel, and Los Cenzontles. Plus music for the November Mongolia feature, remembering Hossam Ramzy, and the new Red Gold Green & Blue, and World Peace compilations.
Friday, November 8
Global Village devotes to the show to some different kinds of reggae this time – including pianist Monty Alexander’s new reggae-jazz album of Thelonious Monk compositions; Japanese folk-reggae from the Minyo Crusaders; blues-reggae from the new Red, Gold, Green & Blue all-star set; new albums from former Gladiator Clinton Fearon and U.K. reggae pioneers Steel Pulse; South African reggae great Lucky Dube; Toots & the Maytals with Bonnie Raitt (whose birthday is today – Bonnie is a November featured artist on Strange Currency and Crossroads this month); and in conjunction with the November Music of Mongolia feature, we’ll hear some related sounds from Albert Kuvezin & Yat-Kha doing a Bob Marley cover.
