Big Band Throwback Sounds Of The Fat Babies, More 'Beatlejazz'

Night Train celebrates birthdays of Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, Brazilian composer and pianist Antonio Adolfo, drummer and band leader Chick Webb, bassist Rufus Reid and pianist Sir Roland Hanna. Plus more for the February ‘Beatle Jazz’ feature with jazz covers of Beatles tunes this time from Anthony Wilson, Lynne Arriale, John Scofield and Herbie Hancock – and also new music from Edward Simon, George Cables, Rene Marie, and the Pat Metheny Unity Group.

Among the highlights tonight on the Night Train - jazz trumpeters Louis Armstrong and Donald Byrd, singers Helen Merrill and Cassandra Wilson, bassists Eberhard Weber and Christian McBride, and saxophonists Art Pepper and John Coltrane.

Tonight on the Night Train – the sound of ‘20s swing from the contemporary band, the Fat Babies; soul jazz from Organissimo and Dr. Lonnie Smith; Brazilian bassist Nilson Matta’s different take on the music of Black Orpheus, which helped introduce bossa nova music outside Brazil; a salute to Thelonious Monk from the Claire Daly Quintet; and classics from Joe Williams, Horace Silver and Lester Young.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
