The Wichita City Council on Tuesday selected its newest member.
Longtime public health advocate Becky Tuttle will replace outgoing District 2 representative Pete Meitzner, who is leaving to serve on the Sedgwick County Commission.
Tuttle is the director of community development at the Greater Wichita YMCA, and helped launch the Bike Share ICT program. She also serves on the District 2 advisory board.
In her speech to council members before their vote, Tuttle said she wants today’s youth to still be living in Wichita 10 years from now.
“They’re living in our community because they’re tethered here because of great jobs, with a diversified economy, using skills that they’ve acquired in our institutions of higher learning," she said.
"Safe and healthy communities do not and will not happen by accident. And one of the core functions of any government agency is to ensure that all of our residents have the ability to live well.”
Tuttle received 5 out 6 votes; Council Member Bryan Frye voted for former Goddard Mayor Marcey Gregory. Three other candidates — David Babich, Daniel Rutherford and Chuck Schmidt — were also in the running for the seat.
Tuttle will be sworn in at next week's council meeting. The seat will be up for a regular election in November.
