Big March Jazz Birthdays And Birthdays Of Jason Marsalis, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis And Jan Garbarek

Night_Train_Square.jpg

Monday, March 2

Night Train kicks off the March feature marking birthdays of Bobby McFerrin (70), Ralph Towner (80), and Ornette Coleman and Tommy Flanagan (90), and features music from saxophonist Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and drummer Clarence Penn, both born on this date. Also featured tonight new music from Vincent Herring, Bobby Watson and Gary Bartz (celebrating the Charlie Parker centennial), the Calle Loiza Latin Jazz Project (revisiting jazz standards in new Latin jazz arrangements), and Kelley Johnson (with a cool jazz version, really!, of a song from the Carpenters).

Tuesday, March 3

Some hard boppin’ tonight on the Night Train, as the show focuses on the more bluesy and earthy style of jazz that evolved after bebop. We’ll hear performances and compositions from such hard bop masters as Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Duke Pearson and Bobby Timmons. We’ll also hear music from a remarkable Latin jazz project from trombonist Roswell Rudd and cuatro player Yomo Toro, another great trombonist – Melba Liston, and the vibes of both Khan Jamal and Jason Marsalis.
