Monday, April 1
Night Train kicks off the April feature of music from soul jazz tenor master Stanley Turrentine in honor of the 85th anniversary of his birth. We’ll hear music from a couple of his classic Blue Note and CTI releases tonight. Plus we remember poet, activist, and singer Gil Scott-Heron on his birthday, feature music from artists with regional concerts dates and appearing at the upcoming NEA Jazz Masters and International Jazz Day concert, and highlight the latest from Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom, Lorraine Feather, and the Chicago Soul Jazz Collective.
Tuesday, April 2
Night Train remembers legendary guitarist and fusion pioneer Larry Coryell on what would have been his birthday. We’ll hear early music from him with Chico Hamilton, Herbie Mann, and Gary Burton, a later guest appearance with Charles Mingus, duo projects with Philip Catherine and Alphonse Mouzon, work he did as a leader at several points in his career, and in hour two, a special concert performance with bassist Mark Egan and drummer Paul Wertico.
Wednesday, April 3
Night Train marks birthdays of soul jazz organist Jimmy McGriff and bassist Scott LaFaro (best known for his work in the legendary Bill Evans Trio), and continues with more music from April featured artist Stanley Turrentine, along with this week’s salute to 2019 NEA Jazz Masters and artists appearing at this year’s Jazz Masters Awards concert. Plus a recording from Dexter Gordon just entered into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry and new music from Canadian soul jazz group JV’s Boogaloo Squad and Joe Fiedler with an inventive and funny new take on music from Sesame Street.
