WoodFest Celebrates Ninth Year This Weekend

Maureen Edwards

WoodFest returns to Camp Wood YMCA this Saturday in Elmdale. The festival is now in its ninth year and involves music as well as activities including art making and horse riding. Sponsored by Symphony in the Flint Hills, the event allows musicians of all skill levels to play together while others enjoy the surrounding nature and creative acts.

This year, Grammy-award winner Eugene Friesen will perform as will Mike Marshall, Darol Anger. Kansas artists Richard Crowson and Wayne Gottstine of Split Lip Rayfield will also be one hand. The musicians will lead workshops in a variety of instruments including guitar, percussion, woodwinds, and voice among others. Participants can bring their own instruments or use those provided by Flint Hills Music in Emporia.

As is tradition, a Sunset Concert will be held on Saturday evening with a performance featuring Friesen (cello), Marshall (mandolin) and Anger (fiddle). Friesen will perform Sunday at 10 a.m. with the Sunrise Concert. Learn more at http://woodfestks.com/
