Remembering Randy Weston, Jazz Birthdays & 90th Birthday Feature
Night Train begins a week long tribute to pianist Randy Weston who passed away earlier this month; continues the September feature celebrating 90th birthdays of Cannonball Adderley, Frank Foster and Horace Silver (including a special featuring Silver in hour two of the show); and marks birthdays tonight of organist and former Ray Charles’ band member Dr. James Polk, and lyricist and singer Lorraine Feather.
It’s a Baby Face Willette extravaganza tonight on the Night Train as we mark the birthday of the pioneering soul-jazz organist who left behind only a small collection of recordings under his own name and with Grant Green and Lou Donaldson. We’ll hear some of those recordings and a cover of one of his compositions in hour one and more in a special in hour two of the show. Also more from September featured artists Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver and Frank Foster, and we continue our weeklong tribute to pianist and composer Randy Weston.
Night Train marks birthdays of organist Papa John DeFrancesco, trumpeter Brian Lynch, singer Ella Mae Morse, and saxophonist Scott Hamilton. We also continue our September feature, this time with music from Horace Silver and Cannonball Adderley, and our week long salute to Randy Weston, including music from his album Blues to Africa and a special in hour two featuring Weston at the Newport Jazz Festival.
Night Train marks birthdays of critic, songwriter and producer Leonard Feather (including one of his songs done by Aretha Franklin), and sophisticated R&B great Charles Brown (including a special featuring his music in hour two of the show). Plus more from September featured artists Cannonball Adderley and Horace Silver, and we wrap up our week-long tribute to Randy Weston with music from one of his early albums and from one of the releases in his Portraits trilogy.
