Wrapping Up Duos & Birthdays Of Dexter Gordon, Willie Bobo, Ralph Towner & More
Night Train kicks off the week with jazz guitarists – including Al DiMeola, Pat Metheny, Paco de Lucia, Steve Masakowski, Will Bernard, Julian Lage, Melvin Sparks, Joe Pass, and George Benson.
Night Train pays tribute to violinist Didier Lockwood who passed away last week; marks birthdays of tenor sax giant Dexter Gordon, contemporary gypsy jazz guitarist Stephane Wrembel, and organist Robert Kennedy; highlights new music guitarist Hristo Vitchev, and saxophonists Dan Block and Eric Alexander; and continues with the February duos feature including an unreleased duet set from saxophonist James Carter and pianist Cyrus Chestnut.
Night Train wraps up the February Duos Feature with duos projects from contemporary eclectic guitarist Julian Lage, including music from the Grammy nominated Mount Royal album with Chris Eldridge, and a 2017 Savannah Music Festival performance from the two in hour two of the show. We’ll also mark birthdays of Latin jazz percussionist Willie Bobo, singer Roseanna Vitro, and swing guitarist Marty Grosz, and highlight new music from Van Morrison, Steve Hobbs, and Rahsaan Barber.
Night Train kicks off the March feature celebrating Women’s History Month with music from female jazz artists, including Marian McPartland who was born 100 years ago this month, and Kate McGarry from her new album. Plus birthday celebrations for trombonist Benny Powell, guitarist Ralph Towner (from his latest solo album and in duo projects with Gary Burton and Paolo Fresu), and Brazilian bassist Nilson Matta, including a performance he did as part of Trio da Paz at the Newport Jazz Festival in hour two of the show.
