Night Train marks the centennial birthday of jump blues saxophonist and singer Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, along with birthdays of Texas guitarist Pee Wee Crayton, saxophonist Harold Land, and influential arranger and bandleader Fletcher Henderson (including a Jazz Profiles special about him in hour two of the show). Also music from Nina Simone (a new Rock Hall of Fame inductee), a tribute to pianist Willie Pickens, and new music from Organissimo, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Harold Mabern, and Vincent Herring.

Another round of birthday salutes tonight on the Night Train for trombonist Bob Brookmeyer (including a Jazz Profiles special featuring him in hour two), pianist and Jazz Messenger Bobby Timmons, saxophonist and Chick Corea band member Eric Marienthal, trumpeters Kermit Ruffins and Bob Lark, and guitarist Jacques Lesure. Plus new music from Tom Harrell, and Arturo O’Farrill with Chucho Valdes.

Night Train showcases new releases tonight, including 2017 Holiday albums from the Michael Treni Big Band, Chris Pasin, Smoky Greenwell, and U.S. Army Blues. Also new albums from Cory Weeds, Joey Alexander, Takaaki, Michel Camilo, Roswell Rudd and Willie Jones III.

Night Train marks the first day of winter with a wide array of original and favorite songs of the season. Highlights include music from Cyrille Aimee, Sting, Al DiMeola, Frank Kimbrough and Dave Stryker in hour one; and Cyrus Chestnut, Pee Wee Ellis (of the James Brown Horns), the Yellowjackets, the Ted Rosenthal Trio, and Kurt Elling in hour two of the show.
