Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate the birthday of acclaimed singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell. Night Train highlights jazz versions of some of her classic songs from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Karrin Allyson, Diana Krall, Pat Martino with Cassandra Wilson, Tierney Sutton and more, along with a track from Mitchell’s Mingus album,  and in hour two, a special devoted to her classic album, Blue.

A great collection of jazz birthdays celebrated tonight on the Night Train – including ‘cool jazz’ singer Chris Connor, eclectic contemporary clarinetist Don Byron, ubiquitous drummer Eric Harland, and acclaimed guitarist Russell Malone (including his latest guest appearance on the new jazz set from singer Macy Gray). Plus more from November featured artist Lou Donaldson, and new music from Abbey Lincoln, Dennis Coffey, Catherine Russell, and the Brad Mehldau Trio.

Night Train highlights music and musicians from around the world – including Brazil’s Antonio Adolfo and Nilson Matta, Argentina’s Diego Urcola, Cameroon’s Gino Sitson, the Gabriel Alegria’s Afro-Peruvian Sextet, and saxophonist Juli Wood from her album featuring jazz renditions of traditional music from Finland. Plus the jazz flutes of Charles Lloyd, Eric Dolphy, Anne Drummond, Joe Farrell, T.K. Blue, and David ‘Fathead’ Newman.

Tonight on the Night Train – more music from November featured artist Lou Donaldson, previews of several regional jazz concerts coming up this week, birthday salutes to flutist Hubert Laws, film composer Ennio Morricone, pianist Paul Bley, and vibes player Warren Wolf – including a special performance from Wolf at the Savannah Music Festival.
