Halloween Tricks & Treats, Lou Donaldson's 90th And Soul Jazz - Classic & Contemporary
Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency for a full evening of music tricks and treats, ghosts and goblins, and lots of spirited and scary sounds.
Night Train kicks of the November feature celebrating soul jazz saxophonist Lou Donaldson’s 90th on his birthday with some classic tracks from him and a conversation he did for the NEA Jazz Masters. It’s also the birthday of Latin Jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig, singer and songwriter Carmen Lundy, pianist and arranger Roger Kellaway, and drummer Antonio Sanchez. And there’s new music from Macy Gray and Brian Lynch, a classic from Dr. Lonnie Smith, and jazz concert previews for the coming week.
Night Train marks the birthday of famed jazz recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder (with music he recorded from John Coltrane and November featured artist Lou Donaldson), saxophonists Phil Woods and Ernest Dawkins, pianist Frank Kimbrough, and singer Kurt Elling (including a special live performance from Elling at the famed Birdland club in hour two of the show).
Night Train highlights classic and contemporary soul jazz tonight – including music from November featured artist Lou Donaldson as a leader and in a classic session with soul jazz organ pioneer Jimmy Smith, along with a classic track from Jack McDuff and contemporary soul jazz from Dave Stryker, Brian Charette, Organissimo, and Mike LeDonne.
