Birthday salutes tonight on the Night Train to pianist Hal Galper, drummer Danny Gottlieb, and Texas bluesman Gatemouth Brown (including a special in hour two of the show, Clarence Gatemouth Brown at the Fur Peace Ranch). Also music from April featured artist Benny Carter with Sarah Vaughan, from newly named Guggenheim fellow Wayne Shorter, and from new releases by guitarist Russell Malone, and saxophonists Charles Lloyd and Phil Woods.
Night Train highlights some new standards tonight – include a Willie Dixon classic by Hank Crawford, Freddy Cole “Singing the Blues,” an Aretha Franklin hit done by the Brad Goode Quartet, Ben Flocks doing Dylan, Dave Stryker and David 'Fathead' Newman with Curtis Mayfield covers, and a Stevie Wonder tune from Theo Croker. Plus jazz legends Stanley Turrentine, Charlie Haden and Ahmad Jamal.

Night Train marks birthdays of guitarist Mundell Lowe (94 years young and with a new album) and trombonist Slide Hampton. Plus new music from Willie Nelson (singing Gershwin) and Freddy Cole (singing songs associated with his brother, Nat King Cole). In hour two, it’s a trip to the Savannah Music Festival for a performance from Bill Charlap (whose new trio album is featured in the first hour) joined by special guest Slide Hampton.
