Kicking Off the March Feature With Tenor Sax Man Joe Lovano
Night Train wraps up the February feature with a few more great jazz singers and the final program in the Jazz Profiles Jazz in Song series, this one focused on The Jazz Standard. We'll feature a birthday celebration for Leap Day saxophonist Richie Cole and new music from the Phil Woods Quintet, Bill O’Connell & the Latin Jazz All Stars, and the John Fedchock New York Big Band.
Night Train kicks off the March Joe Lovano feature with his appearance on the latest album from John Scofield and from his release I’m All for You. Plus new music from the Florian Hoefner Group, Kenny Werner with Joyce Moreno, and “Dr. Um,” drummer Peter Erskine. Also birthday salutes to trombonist Benny Powell, guitarist Ralph Towner, and bassist Nilson Matta from the Brazilian jazz group Trio Da Paz, which is celebrating a 30th anniversary with a new album featured on the show tonight, along with a special performance from the group at the Newport Jazz Festival in hour two of the show.
Night Train marks the birthdays of guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel (as a leader and with 2016 NEA Jazz Master Gary Burton) and soulful tenor sax player Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis. Plus more music from March featured artist Joe Lovano (including a guest appearance on the new album from Dr. Lonnie Smith, and his debut release on Blue Note Records) - along with new music from guitarist Julian Lage, Kansas City organ trio OJT, vibes player Tom Collier (with guitarist Bill Frisell), and guitarist Kenny Burrell.
Some tough tenors on tap tonight on the Night Train, including Sonny Rollins, Ernie Watts, Anton Schwartz, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins with Ben Webster, and John Coltrane with Duke Ellington. Also music from singers Roseanna Vitro and Tierney Sutton, 2016 NEA jazz Master Gary Burton, and hard bop great Horace Silver.
