Mardi Gras Jazz & The Jazz Singers
Tonight on the Night Train, classic recordings from Miles Davis and Bill Evans, tributes to Chet Baker from Luciana Souza and Eliane Elias and a celebration of Billie Holiday from saxophonist Scott Hamilton, plus vocalists Ernie Andrews and Lucy Smith for the February Jazz Singers feature.
Night Train celebrates Mardi Gras with music from some carnival hot spots – New Orleans (including a new album from drummer Herlin Riley, and Dee Dee Bridgewater’s recent salute to the Crescent City), Trinidad (with music from steel drum jazzman Andy Narell) and Brazil (including a new 30th anniversary release from the critically acclaimed Trio da Paz). Plus a Riverwalk Mardi Gras Party in hour two of the show.
Night Train highlights birthdays of pianists Antonio Adolfo (also featured tonight on Global Village) and Roland Hanna, trumpeter Paolo Fresu, bassist Rufus Reid, and drummer Chick Webb – focusing on the band Webb led that featured a young Ella Fitzgerald. There’s more about Ella in a Jazz Profiles special in hour two of the show for the February Jazz Singers feature. Plus new releases in hour one for the feature from vocalists Stacey Kent, Rebecca Kilgore, and Judy Bisantz in a tribute to Chet Baker.
As part of the February feature celebrating the jazz singers, Night Train highlights some male jazz vocalists tonight – from veterans like Jon Hendricks and Ernie Andrews to rising stars like Gregory Porter and Jose James. Plus new music from saxophonist Ernie Krivda, the Chester Thompson Trio, vibes player Tom Collier (with Bill Frisell as special guest) and guitar great Kenny Burrell.
