Global Village celebrates the birthday of Latin jazz piano master Eddie Palmieri; features holiday sounds from Brave Combo, Freddie McGregor and Cuba L.A.; and showcases new music from the Polkaholix, the Empresarios, and the Raya Brass Band.
Wednesday, December 16
Global Village highlights music from China in performances from internationally renowned pipa player Wu Man, U.S.-based Chinese performer and educator Gao Hong, and the oldest and largest Chinese orchestra in America – the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York. Plus music from Spain’s Buika and Diego Amador, Scotland’s John Martyn and Griselda Sanderson, and new releases from Seckou Keita and TriBeCaStan.

Birthday salutes to Carlton Barrett of the Wailers, Art Neville of the Neville Brothers, and Paul Butterfield (with the Global Village annual tradition of playing the psychedelic world blues jam, East West, from the Butterfield Blues Band) – plus new music from New Zealand’s Te Vaka and highlife star Pat Thomas, and a holiday rarity from the early edition of the Wailers.

Global Village heads to the Balkans for music from early music master Jordi Savall’s Balkan Spirit project, the Brooklyn-based Raya Brass Band, and one of the premier contemporary Balkan brass bands – the Boban and Marko Markovic Orchestra. Plus stops along the way in Lisbon, the Caribbean, Celtic Spain, and a special “Saturday Night on Saturn” date with exotica legend Les Baxter.
