A Thanksgiving Feast, Gato Barbieri’s Birthday & More World Saxophones

Monday November 24

Global Village heads to Norway for music from two magnificent saxophonists (as we feature that instrument throughout November) who combine traditional and jazz influences – the pioneering Jan Garbarek and inventive contemporary player Karl Seglem. Also music from The Sweet Sunny North set from David Lindley and Henry Kaiser with over 60 Norwegian musicians, and "Norwegian Wood" from Herbie Hancock. Plus Jamaican sounds from African saxophonist Manu Dibango and new music from roots reggae group Arise Roots, and the latest from Berlin’s 17 Hippies.

Tuesday November 25

Some dance music in this visit to the Global Village – including newly reissued vintage cha cha cha from Abelardo Barroso, a Bulgarian Oro from Grand Fatilla’s new album – and with featured November saxophonists – some Bossa Nova Soul Samba from Ike Quebec, a cool mambo by Greg Piccolo, and contemporary flamenco from Jorge Pardo.

Wednesday November 26

Global Village highlights music from Canada’s Souljazz Orchestra and Joni Mitchell, a different take on the music of Satie from Dan Willis, acclaimed Native American flute player R. Carlos Nakai, and Rough Guide compilations featuring samba and music of Senegal.

Thursday November 27

Thanksgiving Special: Global Village serves up a feast for the holiday with songs about food. On the menu, Rice, Red Beans and Turnip Greens, Sweet Pumpkin, Hot Cross Buns with some Frim Fram Sauce and other musical delicacies.

Friday November 28

Global Village wraps up the November saxophone feature by celebrating the birthday of acclaimed Argentine saxophonist Gato Barbieri – with music from his early avant-garde days to his later commercial successes. Plus new music from guitarists Strunz & Farah, Brooklyn Afrobeat band Zongo Junction, and the RealWorld 25 compilation.
