Night Train starts the week with more great jazz percussionists – this time, Joe Morello (who worked with both Dave Brubeck and Marian McPartland) and the legendary Roy Haynes – new music from Mike Longo, Antonio Adolf, and Catherine Russell - and birthday salutes to guitarist Steve Khan, Latin jazz pioneer Mario Bauza, and singer and pianist Blossom Dearie, including a special devoted to her work in hour two of the show.

Night Train marks birthdays of the legendary Duke Ellington, jazz harmonica master Toots Thielemans, and two Latin jazz giants – percussionist Ray Barretto and flutist Dave Valentin. Plus more for the April ‘Big Beat’ feature – this time from drummers Joe Chambers and Akira Tana, and new music from Fareed Haque, George Cables, Bruce Barth, Dave Stryker, and a newly released live performance from the ‘60s from guitarist Pat Martino and organist Gene Ludwig.

INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY SPECIAL: Night Train teams up with Global Village to celebrate International Jazz Day with a program showcasing artists from around the globe who play jazz, often in interesting fusions with a variety of world styles. Among the artists featured are Jamaica’s Monty Alexander, Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem, Norway’s Helge Lien Trio, and the new Haitian jazz project from Jacques Schwarz-Bart.
Then in hour two it’s a Savannah Music Festival special of Brazilian Duets with Toots Thielemans, Oscar Castro-Neves, Hamilton de Holanda, and more.

Night Train marks the birthday of one of the great vocalists and balladeers of jazz – Shirley Horn. Plus the start of a new month’s feature – with music from guitarist John Scofield, and a centennial birthday celebration for one of the unique figures in jazz – Sun Ra. Also a new solo piano set from Jessica Williams, Jeff Hackworth’s latest Soul t o Go, a live set just out featuring David ‘Fathead’ Newman, and the first ballads project from soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom.
