Global Village this week: the New Month, New Music show and a tribute to Paco de Lucia

SPECIAL: To set the stage for April’s feature, Global Village presents a rebroadcast of its special tribute show that celebrated the life and music of legendary flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, who was known for his technical brilliance and for his pioneering work in shaping the ‘new flamenco’ style. Global Village highlights work from throughout his career, including his first big hit from 1973 (“Entre Dos Aguas”) and from his Latin Grammy winning Cositas Buenas album, as well as collaborations with the legendary flamenco singer Camaron de la Isla, the Guitar Trio (with Al DiMeola and John McLaughlin) and with Chick Corea.
Tuesday, April 1
Global Village marks birthday of Gil Scott-Heron, Ronald Isley of the Isley Brothers and reggae legend Jimmy Cliff. The show also begins a month-long feature of music from flamenco guitar great Paco de Lucia with a selection from his last, Latin Grammy-winning En Vivo album, and highlights music from the new Haiti Direct compilation and the latest from Angelique Kidjo..
Wednesday, April 2
Global Village highlights some different instruments in this show – including the sitar of Anoushka Shankar, oud from Finnish player Jussi Reijonen, accordion by Italian neo-folk master Riccardo Tesi, and electric kora from the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the kora,’ Sekou Kouyate. Plus music from reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto, and April featured artist Paco de Lucia.
Thursday, April 3
Global Village marks the birthday of English folk rock pioneer and guitar hero Richard Thompson with early music he did with then wife Linda Thompson, a guest appearance he made on Linda’s most recent album, and his latest album. Plus more from April featured artist Paco de Lucia, this time as part of the Guitar Trio with John McLaughlin and Al DiMeola – and new music from The Rough Guide to Arabic Café, Tinariwen, and Adrian Raso with Fanfare Ciocarlia.
