Marginalia: John Boyne

John Boyne is an Irish author who has been publishing his work for almost 20 years. He’s written 10 novels, 5 books for young readers--most notably, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas--he has 3 short story collections, and his books have been published in 51 languages.

His newest novel, The Heart’s Invisible Furies, was published last week to much acclaim. It spans 7 decades and touches on many atrocities that were--for better or for worse--woven into the of those decades in Ireland and in the United States. But even with the underlying violence, John Boyne’s novel can at times be considered light, and almost humorous. I reached Boyne via Skype this week at his home in Dublin, and visited about the new book.
