Governor Brownback Defends Call For Kansas Planned Parenthood Investigation
Governor Sam Brownback is defending his call for an investigation into abortion provider practices in Kansas. Two recently released videos claim to show Planned Parenthood officials discussing harvesting or selling organs from fetuses for medical research. The videos prompted Brownback to ask for an investigation.
“They’re statements by credible sources for Planned Parenthood identifying a practice that in this state is illegal and I would say in human kind is barbaric, and we want to make sure that’s not happening here,” Brownback says.
Planned Parenthood officials say the videos are heavily edited and that the organization works within legal and ethical guidelines.
Micah Kubic, with the ACLU of Kansas, says the investigation is “harassment.” He points out that the workers shown in the videos aren’t associated with Planned Parenthood in Kansas.
“There is absolutely no reason for an investigating, there is no evidence. There is no reason to believe that any of this is connected to Kansas at all,” Kubic says.
Officials with Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri say they don’t take part in any tissue donation programs. They call the investigation “political grandstanding.”
