Abortions In Kansas Down 5.4 Percent

According to a report issued Friday by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment there were 7,457 abortions reported in 2012, which is 428 fewer than were reported in 2011.

The preliminary report, Abortions in Kansas 2012is an analysis of data collected by the KDHE Bureau of Epidemiology and Public Health Informatics.

Out-of-state residents outnumbered in-state residents slightly, with 3,796 of Kansas abortions given to out-of-state residents and 3,661 to in-state residents. Of the out-of-state residents who obtained abortions in Kansas, 97.8 percent were from Missouri.

The largest percentage of women getting abortions in Kansas were between 20 and 24 years old, making up 33 percent of all abortions in the state. That number is down 6.1 percent from 2011 numbers.

State law requires that physicians, hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers report abortions to KDHE.
