It would become legal for homebrewers to share the beer they make under a bill that advanced in the Kansas House Friday.
The bill allows homemade beer or wine to be shared with guests or with judges at a competition, but It specifies that no money can be exchanged for the drinks.
Republican Representative Travis Couture-Lovelady says homebrewers had been taking part in judged homebrew contests, before finding out it was technically a violation of state law.
He says the bill will bring Kansas in line with laws in many other states.
"What this bill does is just allows Kansas homebrewers to participate in legitimate activities that homebrewers across the country currently across the country engage in," Couture-Lovelady said.
If given final approval in the House next week, the bill will then go to the state Senate.
