Unemployment numbers for September show improvements both statewide and in Wichita.

Wichita’s unemployment rate fell to 4.4 percent last month, a stronger showing than in August, which experienced 5 percent unemployment. The statewide unemployment rate for September is also 4.4 percent, down from 4.6 percent in August.

According to Emilie Doerksen, an economist for the Kansas Labor Department, private sector growth in the Wichita metropolitan area was seen mostly in construction.

“We saw over-the-year growth and employment of 2,000 jobs added in the private sector,” she says.

Doersken says strong job growth was also seen in Wichita in leisure and hospitality.
