KMUW Partners With Wichita Journalism Collaborative To Support And Enhance Local Journalism

KMUW is a partner in the Wichita Journalism Collaborative, which was announced this week.

The collaborative is an alliance of seven media organizations and three community groups. It was formed to support and enhance quality local journalism during the global pandemic and beyond when accurate, fact-based information is essential.

The members will share resources and work together in covering the challenges people will face in the coming year, as well as the responses to the pandemic by local government, organizations and individuals.

In addition to KMUW, media partners include The Active Age, The Community Voice, The Journal (Kansas Leadership Center), KSN-TV, The Sunflower and The Wichita Eagle. Community partners committed to participating in the initiative include AB&C Bilingual Resources, The Elliott School of Communication at Wichita State University and Wichita Public Library.

The initiative launches with support from the Wichita Community Foundation and with a $100,000 grant from Solutions Journalism Network, based in New York City. SJN encourages rigorous reporting not only on problems and challenges facing communities, but also on the responses.

KMUW produces 10 newscasts daily, in addition to supplying information to its website, kmuw.org. The station also is a member of the Kansas News Service, a partnership of four National Public Radio stations in Kansas.

Tom joined KMUW in 2017 after spending 37 years with The Wichita Eagle where he held a variety of reporting and editing roles. He also is host of The Range, KMUW’s weekly show about where we live and the people who live here. Tom is a board member of the Public Media Journalists Association, serving as small station representative, a volunteer coach for League 42 and an adjunct instructor in the Elliott School of Communication at Wichita State University.
