Well Known Wichita Horticulturalist Greg McHenry Dies At 69

A well-respected Wichita horticulturalist died over the weekend.

69-year old Greg McHenry, owner of Hillside Nursery,  died unexpectedly Saturday. The landscaper was responsible for projects throughout Wichita including Exploration Place, the Downing Gorilla Forest at the Sedgwick County Zoo and the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport.

McHenry was also a big fan of KMUW. For one day of our spring pledge drive, he offered to plant trees in the city for pledges made to the station.

"Our particular nursery was started in 1925, so we’re very close to centennial celebration which we’ve been privileged to do what we can do," McHenry said at the time. "The fact that we are going to help plant something that is kind of necessary anyway seems to me to be a natural thing for us to do and I know it will be successful."

His offer resulted in 150 trees to be planted in parks and open spaces this year.

McHenry’s funeral will be held Friday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Derby.
