After a career that oversaw the capture of the BTK serial killer and the arrests of more than 71 Neighborhood Crips gang members, Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams says he’s tired.
“The first thing I’m going to do is just relax, I’m not going to take phone calls at 3 o’clock in morning…someone else is going to do that,” Williams says.
Williams has been police chief since April of 2000, but has worked for the department since 1975.
Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer was on hand to thank Williams for a long career.
“I remember when our community had a lot of challenges, and you were the guy that we could call late at night to address the various different issues our community or citizens might have, I certainly thank you for that,” Brewer says.
Williams’ last day will be September 5. The announcement of a new chief of police will come at a later date.
