Students and support organizations in Wichita will lead a prayer vigil at Newman University Friday in support of immigration legislation that creates paths to citizenship.
The Newman University Hispanic American Leadership Opportunity group (H.A.L.O.), student organizations, Sunflower Action, the Wichita Casa De La Semilla, and other organizations are partnering to host the prayer vigil called Respect Human Dignity - Keep Families Together.
H.A.L.O's President Michael Asbedo says there's concern about legislation that could repeal the Kansas DREAM Act, which grants in-state tuition to undocumented residents, and other measures that would make it more difficult for undocumented people to become citizens.
"We want to make everybody aware of what's going on and how we don't want those type of laws that are in place like in, for example in Arizona, that we don't want those type of laws here and we want to also focus on that we need to keep families together," says Asbedo.
Speakers at the vigil include state representative Ponka-We Victors of Wichita and religious leaders. There will also be testimonies from immigrants.
The vigil takes place Friday from 7 - 9 p.m. in Newman University's Dugan-Gorges Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.
