At Play: Female Odd Couple Evens Up July Schedule

This is the final week to see Misty Maynard’s X’TICHA: Spider-God of the Amazon at the Kechi Playhouse. A spoof of the old horror movies of the 50’s and 60’s complete with restless natives, an erupting volcano and a giant spider. The show will close on the 29th with the final run of performances beginning this Thursday.

Coming to the Forum Theatre in July it’s the female version of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple. The comedy debuted on Broadway in 1965, telling the story of Felix Unger and Oscar Madison, two mismatched roommates whose antics offered fodder for the popular television sitcom starring Jack Klugman and Tony Randall, plus a 1980’s revival of that show, an short-lived animated series and, reportedly another take on the series coming this fall with former Friends star Matthew Perry.

Though the Klugman/Randall vehicle was successful, many fans remember Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon as the best Oscar and Felix from the 1968 screen adaptation.

As one of Simon’s best-loved plays the original has undergone many stage revivals, though the female version met with something of a mixed reaction upon its 1985 debut. Since that time it has become as much of a staple of theatre as the original and delights audiences with its fresh spin on a familiar story.
