A Musical Life: Sean Gross

Miranda Bargsley

Sean Gross is a Wichita-based singer-songwriter who leads the band Keeper. He also plays drums in Yasmin Nur’s band.

“I can’t tell you why I write songs but I can tell you why I love writing songs. I think songwriting is the pinnacle of music. When you start a band or start a project you’ve got two options. You can either play originals, in which case you’re going to need somebody to write those originals, or you can play covers. Somebody had to write those as well.

There’s nothing like playing a song and then having somebody come to you and go, ‘That was me!’ or ‘That’s me right now!’ or ‘That was me two years ago!’ or whatever it is. I try to write songs about confidence in tough situations. So if you can find that person who needs that little boost of confidence and then you can see them go take your song as inspiration and go talk to that girl they were scared of talking to, that’s a really cool thing and that’s probably one of the things I enjoy most about songwriting: Giving something to somebody else that they can use in their life.”

Jedd Beaudoin is host/producer of the nationally syndicated program Strange Currency. He created and host the podcast Into Music, which examines musical mentorship and creative approaches to the composition, recording and performance of songs. As a music journalist, his work has appeared in PopMatters, Vox, No Depression and Keyboard Magazine.
