A Musical Life: Jenny Wood

Aaron Bowen

Jenny Wood is a Wichita-based songwriter, guitarist and vocalist whose many musical projects include her solo work and fronting The Watchers. She is at work on a new album featuring Katy Guillen and The Girls. On this installment, she discusses her abilities as a whistler.

“My dad was a great whistler. I would do anything to make my dad think that I was cool. I was probably 7, 8, or 9, and he started making me whistle for all our family members. I remember them laughing and him being, like, ‘Well, I’ll be damned! Can you believe that?’ I remember thinking, ‘Wow! Dad thinks I’m cool!’ So I just started doing that a lot and people love it. People really, really like it. Especially the older generation. I’ll be singing my heart out and after we get done playing they’ll come up to me and they look at me and say, ‘God, you are the most amazing whistler I have ever heard.’ They just really relate to that sound. I love it. I absolutely love whistling.”
