Emporia BOE: Security Guards Will Be Armed

Security guards at Emporia's high school and middle school will be able to carry guns starting February 1. 

The Emporia school district's board of education voted Wednesday to allow the security guards to carry guns while on duty at the schools. Currently, all school employees are banned from carrying guns. 

Superintendent Theresa Davidson said the change will move the district closer to a comprehensive plan for making all students and staff safe.

Topeka City Councilman Issues Apology to Newtown

Topeka councilman Chad Manspeaker.

Topeka City Councilman Chad Manspeaker has issued an apology to Newtown, Conn.

That follows an announcement by the Westboro Baptist Church that it plans to picket the Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 children were killed last Friday.

"Given the situation those folks are in, obviously I feel very bad, and the whole country feels very bad for them in their time of need," says Manspeaker.

"We don't want them to think that Topekans are represented by the Phelps."

The Westboro Baptist Church is headquartered in Topeka.
