Political Watchers To Gather At Washburn, Discuss 2012 Election

Voters in Douglas County cast ballots on election day.

Political science professors from around Kansas will gather Thursday to discuss the 2012 election.

Washburn University in Topeka is hosting the meeting, which will focus on the campaign and the election results. Nationwide, Democrats held the presidency and gained some seats in Congress.

Washburn political science professor Bob Beatty says they'll look at how different the election results were nationally and in Kansas, where conservative Republicans gained power in the state Legislature.

Kansas officials are preparing to certify results from this month's general election. The State Board of Canvassers scheduled a meeting Thursday to review totals from races for congressional, legislative and other state offices.

Kansas Democrat Won't Force Recount After Losing By 21 Votes

A Democratic legislator who's been a critic of Republican Secretary of State Kris Kobach says she won't seek a recount after losing her race for re-election by 21 votes out of nearly 11,000 cast.

State Representative Ann Mah of Topeka said Friday that a recount probably wouldn't change the outcome of the 54th House District contest. She lost to Republican challenger Ken Corbet of Topeka.

The district covers parts of Douglas, Shawnee and Osage counties. The last reviews of ballots - in Shawnee County - finished late Thursday.

Lawsuit Filed Over Provisional Ballots

A Kansas House Democrat has filed a lawsuit hoping to force Shawnee County officials to turn over a list of voters who cast provisional ballots.

Rep. Ann Mah of Topeka is trying to avert a narrow election loss.

Democratic Party officials gave The Associated Press a copy of Mah's petition before it was filed in Shawnee County District Court Friday.

Mah trails Republican challenger Ken Corbet of Topeka by 27 votes out of almost 11,000 cast. She says she wants to ensure that all provisional votes are counted and that maybe 150 votes are in play.
