Wichita’s school board will add four new members this week -- including its first Hispanic member.

Ron Rosales was a teacher in the district for more than a decade. He says his Hispanic roots played a role in his election last November. Thirty-five percent of the district’s students are Hispanic — that’s more than any other group, including Caucasian students.

Rosales says as a board member he will focus on an issue many residents are concerned with.

“Money and how we deal with our budget," Rosales says. "And from what I’ve seen so far, I think there’s money out there that can be found for the teachers.”

Rosales will be joined by board newcomers Ben Blankley, Julie Hedrick and Ernestine Krehbiel.
