Most hospitals in south-central Kansas received “average” or “above average” ratings when it comes to quality of care.
Federal health officials released overall ratings for Medicare-certified hospitals so people can comparison shop when they need medical services.
The hospitals were rated on how well they performed on 64 quality measures when treating common conditions such as heart attacks or pneumonia. The overall rating ranges from one to five stars: The more stars, the better a hospital performed.
In the Wichita area, the Kansas Heart Hospital received the top rating of five stars. Wesley Medical Center received a four-star rating. Via Christi Hospitals was rated three-stars.
The Kansas Surgery and Recovery Center and the Kansas Spine & Specialty Center received five-star ratings, but they were not evaluated in all of the quality measures.
The hospital industry has criticized the ratings system as overly simplistic and limited because some of the data used in the survey is several years old.
The Hospital Compare quality results come from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
