Westar Energy is organizing several community meetings across the state to help people sign up for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program.

LIEAP is a federally funded program aimed at providing a one-time payment to people struggling to pay their utility bills.

In order to qualify for the benefit, a person has to make less than 130 percent of the federal poverty level, have a history of making some utility payments and submit an application to the Kansas Department for Children and Families by March 29.

In 2018, more than 36,000 households in Kansas received an average benefit payment of almost $500.
